Unlikely to be barrel. If you remove panel inside again and get someone outside trying to open it, you'll see that the catch bit has slid along the little bar and is now missing the spot needed to open rear door.

Unless they mean the key won't turn the barrel Covkid which means a stripdown.

Remove lock using allen key bolts and then remove the little pin that holds the end piece onto the barrel (the bit that pushes the lock mechanism). Place key inside barrel and remove. Look to see if all segments retract fully with key inserted. If not take key out of barrel taking care not to lose the segments and tiny little springs. Remove segments and springs (make not of the order as the segments (tumblers) are all different) and clean them all up. Carefully stretch the small springs slightly as they may have lost some of their springabilty over 25 years+. Refit springs and segments and try your key in the barrel and check all segments are pulled flush to the barrel.

See this for more of an idea http://www.hallvw.clara.net/lockpart.htm

Also check that the barrel hole in the lock body hasn't got grooves worn in it. Any deep scores and you may be better with a new lock. (use above as a guide to re-keying the new lock to you existing key)
