Yep blanking off is on the cards but whilst the engine still resides in its natural home I will reinstate. Although after 100k it's got pretty messed up , can't see me ever racking up that sort of mileage in a Syncro so is it not worth considering keeping it for the emissions benefits ?

Nah, ditch it.

Lee put it the best in a phone conversation i had with him, needs to be imagined with a Welsh accent. "Imagine stickin a pipe up your a***, the other end up your nose and then go out for nice long run......No, you just wouldn't do it would you, bloody stupid idea"

Hehehehe

Intake manifold refitted with new gasket, total ball ache working over the back blind, all on and torqued up to 'middle aged man leaning in awkward position tight' Have been in text tutorial mode with Alex :ok so got to disconnect diesel pump next and crank the engine to check for oil flow through feed pipe to discount oil starvation as cause of turbo failure. Going to clean and reuse the stubby oil return pipe - I am assuming that this is the pipe that must be replaced with a suitable length / design to reach the syncro sump when fitted to t3 - is this because of the cant angle?
Then refit and pipe up the turbo and see what we get. As ever its glacial progress but getting to know the engine intimately.

Spent an hour or two getting a few pipes back in , cleaned the oil return pipe to reuse. dropped a bolt for the EGR and as ever its gone missing. Anyway whist hanging around in the engine bay this became apparent - any ideas what it should connect to? as you can see its near the oil filler cap and disappears under the air filter box near the MAF sensor. ?? There is also a disconnected plug hanging on the near side front down low near the intercooler connecting pipe and looks like something has been unbolted from the chassis there, almost right next to the plug for the side lights that fit low in the bumper, perhaps the two things are related? alarm?

Disconnected the diesel pump and cranked to check oil flow which was good so fitted turbo and piped it up, no easy feat , access is painfully restricted and everything is at arms length. Anyway fired her up and all seems ok. engine is ticking over sweetly, turbo is spooling up with a reassuring whine. Going to fit the down pipe to the CAT tomorrow and in best traditions in these parts I'm going to rag it up and down the lanes and see what we get, expecting lots of smoke as i burn off the oil in the exhaust system :D

re. the pic above the plug is wired in to a mini loom that also feeds the MAF - seems to have a blanking off plug of some sort in the end of it - perhaps its in the loom from factory for something that is not actually fitted to this model?? one for Andy i reckon.

May be nowt to do wi engine chap, iirc the Shazza has one engine bay harness for engine and everything else up front. If its blanked off its prob for an option not fitted on your car.

Also , since Ive had the sharan when ignition is on after 30secs or so ( scan completed?) the glow plug light starts flashing - if this is a historic fault code warning left over from the turbo blow can I reset without VCDS or a code reader? Would like to clear and start again now turbo has been refitted

Had the code reader from nearby garage on it today - threw up 5 codes ..

18027 glow plug relay (J52) open or short to ground P1619. intermittent, == we could not cancel this one ==

these cancelled....

17654 Needle lift sensor (G80) implausible signal P1246 intermittent
17569 Manifold temp sensor -G72 open circuit /short with power P1161
17762 Slide position sensor control G149 electrical problem in circuit p1354
17571 Fuel temp sensor G81 open circuit/short with power P1163 intermittent

anything to worry about there?

drove around for about half an hour up to temp, boosting great, running sweet, starts on the key. smoking when on full bore and hot still got plenty of oil in exhaust system to get rid of but that was getting less and the drive went on, no smoke otherwise.even from cold start

Faulty wiring to relay or relay itself ? Worth fixing to make cold starts cleaner. Wiring could be sorted during conversion.

So you don't need my humble Sealey VAG code reader after all then...none taken! I'd better get it back from Neil before our Shazzer throws a strop, poor old things looking a bit tired these days but still goes like a good 'un and returns almost 40 liquid gold mpg on a run. Those ADY's are good and no black sludge either

Still need it as want to do a few more tests. Impressed with the 110 tdi , sounds a little agricultural but reassuringly so. Now need to get it out and get the loom etc off to Andy . Just one or two jobs in front of that yet tho
