I would:

Clean off gasket carefully, flat surface off on plate glass with flat sheet fine wet 'n dry, thoroughly clean/degrease, scrape up mating block surface carefully, degrease, ensure no burrs on edges of either;
Use liquid gasket, best is anaerobic one, about £5 from motashops
Coat whole surface well, wipe off any in oilways and whack together tightening 3 bolts alternately and evenly till goo squeezes out all around, don't overtighten, leave 1/2 hour, follow instructions. A good anaerobic one won't solidify in oilways, mixes in with oil.

Failing quoted torque figure go on the lower side of these (lb-ft)
(thread size, not head size):
M-6..................6-9
M-8..................14-21
M-10.................28-40

[1 lb-ft = 1.35 N-m or a N-m is about 3/4 lb-ft]

if its a diesel - which of course we have no idea because someone hasn't told us :roll: - it is a metal gasket between oil cooler bracket and engine block.

Thanks guys for the help, it's for diesel but the old broken one wasn't a metal one so paper gasket will be the answer then

they cost about £3 from VAG dealers for a metal one. I think I tried using a diy paper one and it leaked
