Carb swapping

Post by scarysteve »

Hi there. I have petrol 1.6 ct Aircooled T25. It has a crap 34 pict 4 carb on it. Had it stripped, rebuilt, dipped and it is now on it's way out. I think someone once said that you could swap them over for 34 pict 3. Is that right, if so is thee anything I need to consider? Are thee any other options?
Cheers

Hello,

Sory to see you are struggling..

1 What is wrong with the existing carb. What are you trying to do

2 Pict 34 / 3 is not the way to go, because the throttle linkage, and other bits, are on the wrong side, and it was not designed for a bakelite spacer gasket.

What is the general state of the engine..

Photos will help!!

This is my retro tuned CT, 1600 cc, 28 mpg, 115 kph.

Hi. The engine is now cutting out. When I got the carb cleaned and jetted etc last time it worked fine but was a frankenstein of two carbs (cost cutting) and worked until now. It is a real pain. I've been through this before and found it was the carb. If I adjust the air intake, it'll work for a while but runs too high and stinks the cab out with its higher emissions.
Here is a link to some photos:

Any help would do. My mechanic seemed to think a different carb would work??

That would suggest that its sucking in air where it shouldn't be - if you're having to compensate that much. Assuming you know which is the throttle shaft, grab hold on one end and see how much movement is in it (up and down). You could indeed be right, it might be the carb, but it could also be a faulty cut off jet, or a leak where the carb bolts to inlet, or even past that where inlet bolts to heads - they would all cause cutting out.

Hello,

Just looked at your photos.....

You get so much info...

Right, your set up does not look too bad..

However.. the flexi vacuum hoses are a bit spaghetti...

Have you got everything connected up right.. look in the Haynes..

Including the vacuum pipe of the right hand inlet manifold (behind the air cleaner)

Your distributor looks to be a 'long way round'..

How has the timing been set.

Please post another photo of the LHS of the engine bay to show the 2 electronic boxes..

Cordialement,

Cheers guys. I'll get some more posted but your right in comparison to your CT mine is a messy looking girl. I seem to have two pipes coming out of the vacuum you seem to have one or it the angle of the shot?

Is there any replacements or adjustments that can be made to get a good carb on my ct then? New engine sounds drastic?
Thanks

Hello,

Don't get scared Steve.....

A new engine is perhaps a bit drastic...

The engine you see in the picture is running a 'retrofit' Single Vacuum Distributor Advance' AKA SVDA distributor..

Total cost less than € 100 .. less than the cost of the replacement Hall sensor..

I've just sent all this info to another member, but I cant seem to copy the text at the moment....

The PICT 34/4 carb is very good when set correctly....

But.... after you have got the bits needed, dizzy and coil kit, you will have to set up the engine properly,

So.. first valve timing, then ignition timing, then Carbu....

I am currently editing for my u tube channel (sarran1955) some films showing different timing setups for the CT engine...

But first I'm going Ski ing for a week......because I can..

Thanks for that. I have seen a aftermarket EMPI 34 PICT style replacement carburettor with a 12 volt electric choke.

It will fit an Aircooled Volkswagen with a 1600cc Type 1 twin port Aircooled engine and 12 volt electrics and have been told it is a direct replacemnet of the 34PICT-4.

Any advice before I decide to buy it by mistake?

Oh NO!
Broke down in Newtonmore. The fuel pipe eroded under the H-cloth (what is the point if you can't see the pipe?). Took 4" off another pipe to fix it then realise the little electrode wire on the distributor had come away and one wire had been shredded by the rotor - I didn't pack my spare one. Never leave home without a spare distributor!
