Mechanical fuel pump - urgent help.
I'm supposed to be off to Europe in a couple of weeks for a 3 month tour and van has developed some problems.
My van, 1981 petrol Aircooled has gone into the garage and apparently needs a new "mechanical fuel pump". The garage is having problems getting parts details or a supplier for one. Can anyone help me identify and locate the part please?
****E D I T**** It seems that the fuel pump is actually working fine but there is a big oil leak coming from it so it isn't just a question of fitting an electrical one.
Also a wheel bearing has gone. Is there anywhere that supplies them still?
I'm not a mechanical person and In a bit of a p'd off fluster here.
Cheers for any help.
Dave.

Re: Mechanical fuel pump - urgent help.
Electric fuel pump from ebay will replace your mechanical one
Wheel bearing - readily available at places like GSF or better still, Brickwerks!
(google brickwerks - does mail order, usually arrives next working day - not sure about saturdays though)
Also Just Kampers

Actually, you could jsut give Brickwerks a ring....there are four clicks to find his phone number, but they are very helpful for genuine enquiries! You will see what I mean when you get to their web site. They may even do a mechanical fuel pump for you.

Re: Mechanical fuel pump - urgent help.
My memory a tadge rusty but I believe some pumps for the Aircooled range are now obsolete. These engines were only fitted for around three years when the T25 first came out and as said, an electric fuel pump is the answer. You should be able to leave the old pump in place as a temporary blanking plate but certainly this blanking plate is available even if the pump is not.
If you tell them all that, they'll soon know the score and be able to get on with the job. You may be able to save a few quid by sourcing an electric pump yourself. They can be expensive via motor accessory places.

Re: Mechanical fuel pump - urgent help.
Cheers for reply Em. Post just edited that there is actually a leak from the pump so has to be removed, not just a straight switch over to electric
I take it hole that will be left if removed can be sealed somehow and then switch to the elctric one?

Just make up or buy a plate that fits where old pump used to go or if desperate, whip it off, remove any pushrod that exists and then seal pump up with a made up gasket or whatever. As long as they can seal the leak, its mechanical abilities don't matter as it'll be redundant. New fuel hose obviously.

Re: Mechanical fuel pump - urgent help.
What's it leaking?? if petrol, it won't matter as the electric pump will by pass this
and the leaky unit can stay. Mine currently running with an electric pump and the mechanical still fitted

Re: Mechanical fuel pump - urgent help.
Everything now found and ordered. Thank you for your help as always.
Now, when fixed, if the van can survive it's 3 month tour round Europe without anything major going wrong I'll never moan about anything going wrong again.
Cheers people
