It's on the gearbox side of the stat housing, the (red) one on the nearside is the manifold heater switch.

Rear = front , front of the engine connects to the gearbox , rear has the yellow number plate !

Got it thanks, part of the problem turned out to be in the plug one of the connections had rotted. Now the gauge kind of works the fan is coming in when the gauge reads just above the white area to the left it used to be about the warning light. I've ordered a new sensor and seal from brickworks. I hope this sorts it.

You do know tha rad fan is independent to the engine sensors don't you, works off the temp switch actually in the rad. Normal temp is about 3/4 before it kicks in

Yes, the radiator is red hot when the fan comes in and cools it down as it should. I found the fan switch and bridged it out to make sure it was working so I didn't cook the engine whilst staring at a dodgy gauge. It came in just over half way before the engine was removed, and after refitting it stopped altogether, that's when I found the broken terminal in the plug, now the gauge does move but is reading incorrectly. I hope!

Exactly what I'm thinking, don't want to turn a rebuilt engine into toast!
