Phew!!

Glad you had it sniff tested though. You now have peace of mind....until the next crises anyway.

Wallet may be lighter....but not as light as a new engine.

Good result!

Bet it was cut down because the original clip cut through it....and rather than invest in a new hose, the original one was cut down.

Think you were right em.
Cut down and the poor quality non vw clamp cut through it.
I have replaced 2 pipes and all the clips with vw genuine parts. Blew £200 but cheaper then engine.
Bled the air out the rad today and i will check and top up in the morning.
Fingers crossed all done. Thermostat replecement was much easier then I thought.

Test run in the morning.
Thanks to all.

Bad times. I have gases in my water system. Best news head gasket. Worst news cracked head. Ideas?

either is expensive.
There's no "head gasket" in a flat four
it has a steel sealing ring at the top of the cylinder and a silicon "O" ring around the cylinder

Re:sniffer test. I like the idea of this but how does one go about getting the as to do it? Where else undertakes the test ? Local garage? Mitch.
Why would the glass be anything other than half full?

Most garages have the equipment
It's just a gas analyser

Its a diesel.
Anyone had a go at taking the head off a non turbo diesel.
I would like to have a go myself as it could be a gasket failure or at worst a cracked head.
Is is something best left to a garage I am in fear of a massive bill!
A gasket is 50 and a head is 500 recon.
Ideas?
