Rear suspension arms

Post by lazycat »

Hi folks

First i need to apologise I've been lurking around this site for ages and contributed very little sorry.
Four relatively trouble free years with our bus came to an abrupt end tonight.
To cut a very long story short it appears iv'e broken both rear suspension arms.
I could do with some help sourcing replacments :(

cheers

Do you mean the trailing arm? If so, they are the same as a 2wd (if you've a 14") so that opens up your searching a bit. What's happened to them, most can be repaired..

The trailing arm yes.14" yes
They look totally shot, one has completely come off just behind the wheel the other has a major crack in a similar place.Quite surprised at this as the bus is pretty solid.
Thanks

Goodness, how rusty are they then... usually, you will find the outer pick up forks for the trailing arms, that protrude from the rear cross member, rust away badly as well, before the whole arm. Check these closely!

If/when you buy a set of replacements make sure the old bushes have been pushed out before you buy them.
Have had a perfectly good/serviceable pair of swing arms that looked pukka until the bushes were pushed out, they were hanging inside and looked like tea bags!!!

oh , and inspect/ask for pics of spring seats. Get the seller to photo the top side where the spring seats, with the rubber pads removed and ask them to give them a good wire brush before they photo them :ok

Cut old ones carefully through rubber bush and bolt up side of fork, ideally with a recip saw (sabresaw) for safety. Using a 115mm grinder is difficult as well as dangerous

And maybe think about finding a better equipped mot tester. Maybe one with eyes. Those arms don't go from mot pass to totally snapped in a year !

Lee.

Ps. Glad it's not a lot worse.
