quick fluids question

Post by ermie571 »

Hi guys, very quick fluids question.

Van currently in garage having the gear shift sorted....while its in the air some other jobs being done...including gear box oil change.

Is the front diff the same fluid as the back gear box, or does it have something different?

Thanks

Sorry - I didn't quite get this from the wiki _ it says this carplan 75w/90 gl4/gl5 for the transaxle (that's the gear box right?) and the same as 2wd I think...but this bit...

Spec GL-4 or GL-5 EP 80W Ditto transaxle sem-synths 1.5 litres

has me confuddled!

80/90 for both.

However that comes in 2 grades.
GL4 or GL5.

GL5 is more modern and in theory better however it had some additives that were harmful to the gearbox so if your not sure it's better to use GL4 for the gearbox.
The same stuff is also suitable for the front diff, but the stuff GL5 attacks is not in the front duff so your safe to use GL5 at the front.

Supposedly GL5 has been modified and the nasties removed, some are marked up GL4/GL5...

Basically a mine field, Gl4 to be safe.

Oh and...

A transaxle is a mixture of transmission and axle, which is what a T3 has.
Gearbox, like what us Brits call it isn't exactly correct.... Bit like....

:ok

Its got Brickwerks rear shocks on the way...has had new springs (ok new second hand industrial springs  ), a touch of welding and a new cv gaiter. New linkage bushes and a gear stick rebuild.
