track rod ends Non VW Citroen Xsara

Post by maxstu »

Hi All,

Renewing the osf wheel hub on a mates Xsara.

Is there a knack for removing above item said please? Dont have an air gun and track rod end nut and body just spins as I turn spanner. I can cut off old one and replace as they are cheap as chips. But then I will have a the same problem spinning new nylock nut tight again. Theres no way of grip metal cone beneath rubber boot to prevent spinning?

Got any old timer trick to release old bit or tighten new nut please?

In the absence of an air gun....lube the little bit of thread you can see....use a long bar (jack handle or similar of at least a metre long) to apply pressure close to the track rod end so the taper is forced together..this usually creates enough friction to allow the nut to come off.

Also.....it is worth looking at the end of the track rod as they often have an allen key internally formed so a tool can be inserted to prevent spinning.

i would repalce at the same time they are cheap,

cut them off new ones come with a alan key or torq drive at the end of the tread or two flats for a spanner to allow you to hold them while doing them up. when you get them it will be obvious. they can be tight on the thread so hitting with a hammer to shock and heat my be needed to unwind it off the track rod.
also count how many times you turn it while you unwind it so you can count the new one back on too aviod having to have it tracked up after.
i dare say there is a video on youtube

Thanks to both of you.

I thought new one would have allen key head to hold as you turn nut, just like suspension drop bars. But original doesnt nor does replacement now bought. I might cut a slot in top of thread to hold with a flat blade screw driver until I get nut binding well enough to tighten.

Thanks again

Just had a peep on youtube. Loads of postings how to replace rod ends. Most are using airguns. Ziiiiiiiip! Nut off. Ziiiiiiiip bbrrrp! New nut on.

Thinking of rigging up my hammer drill with small extention bar and correct size socket and giving taht a go. Will report back tomorrow.

Very easily solved this.

As the car was on axle stands I had a trolley jack available

When when it came round to fitting item, I gently knocked new rod end with soft mallet in to hub carrier, added nut a couple of threads to prevent it falling out again, then raised a trolley jack underneath joint to pinch it up enough to spin up nylock nut to correct torque. Simple idea.

DO NOT raise jack higher then necessary. Just to the point that causes friction between the two surfaces allowing nut to spin up. Otherwise a bent track arm or damaged hub carrier may ruin your day
