First make sure your's is the same one as the type we had done VDO 500 (the one in the link is from a T4 I think) The guys at lockwoods are really helpful
Remove the speedo head from it's housing then first lift (gently!) the end of the needle over the stop to find it's natural resting position it should correspond to a white mark on the speedo face then gently ease the needle off
* WARNING it can take a bit of oomph to get it off and I found they can fly a long way and bounce of the ceiling, floor and any other non forgiving thing in the vicinity

then undo the two screws on the face and your new one goes over the top of the old one.
Reverse the above and Robert is your Mum's brother.

As Martin pointed out the odometer and trip will still read in KMs
