Hazards not working

Post by AdamK »

Hi all

Wondered if anybody could help...
I've had a good route through on here, but nobody seems to have quite the same problem as me...

I have working indicators, but recently, when I turned on the hazards, the indictor LED and the hazard light came on continuously accompanied by an annoying buzz from the relay.

I ordered a relay and a new hazard switch. I swapped the relay unit (with a 21 on it, the new one from Jusk Kampers also with a 21 printed on it) Having put the new relay on, the indicators still work, and he hazard switch flashes along with the clicking relay, but the indicators do not flash at all.

I then tried the new switch (although clearly the old one must be working). This resulted in a whole host of weird things happening. This actually caused the relay to click all the time even with the hazard switch in the off position with ignition on. i did somehow manage to get the hazards working eventually, but in addition to them flashing, the headlights and brake lights were also flashing.

i have now returned to the orignal switch and the new relay. Basically i'm now in a position where I have working indicators when operated on the stalk. However, lights outside do not work with the hazard switch. Even with the hazard switch is on, the relay clicks, and the hazard switch and indicator LED lights up.

I'm guessing since the indicators work that there is not an earth problem on the lights.
Can anybody suggest what I need to do next please?

All help very much appreciated!

Thanks

Adam

I had a similer problem but not the flashing headlights. I unpluged the conecter on the back of the dash which conects the copper tape. I bought some electrical connecter cleaner from the local hardware shop and gave the tape at the conecter area and the conecter itself a good clean. I pulled all the earths off and cleaned them with a the same stuff and a nail file. All works fine now! :ok
If in doubt give it a clout!

With no clue as to what year this vehicle is, Its harder to advise. Invariably the culprits are a loose wire on reverse of fusebox, a fuse which looks intact but has a small hairline crack in the fuse material, or a bad earth. The earth crown is a good starting place.

Thanks for your advice. It turned out to be a faulty switch. I bought a new one from JK, but it didn't fit the dash, and I had to leave a wire off the connection block as it caused the hazards to flash permanently despite the switch not being on! Bizarre. Ended up swapping for a genuine part from VW Heritage, plugged straight in and worked, plus it fits the dash just like the original one. All earth connectors had been renewed before so i'm grateful it wasn't another earth fault! Thanks for your advice guys.
