yes, removing the slave was difficult due to seized bolts and putting back was tricky, i had to get some help to hold that bolt up before i got the nut back on it, you could also attach the bolts in place from underneath and captive them with some sort of metal glue compound instead of welding? the slave cylinder was definitely a patience thing. i might measure the lever arm travel (how many mm should it travel for the cylinders to be ruled out as the problem with the clutch?) to make sure and rule out any problem with the master cylinder which i haven't replaced.

thanks all for your words of encouragement, i want to tackle this and learn something as you guys have done before me, this is also a mind over matter thing having not done this before.

That's the spirit ... we all have to start somewhere and as I said there's nowt really complicated just learning techniques to help yourself ... like we did before

such a shame your learning curve passed through some choice winter temperatures, that's never nice.
I'm currently routing ducting and wiring under the van.

Hate doing stuff like this in bad weather

May I add, that when all is done and you get to mating the box back up with the engine, getting the input shaft into the splines of the clutch and then into the spigot bearing can be a pain, but must be done carefully or you can do damage. As long as you have lined up the centre plate correctly (pref with a proper alignment tool ) it WILL go in, you just have to have the box lined up millimetre perfect Don't ever be tempted to "pull it together" with the bellhousing bolts !!!

Most important, you need to stop often, for lots of cups of tea

If you have trouble lining the box up put the van in gear and turn the CV flanges that moves the input shaft ... only a tiny bit of course.

I always find it funny (well funny may not be the correct word ) that you can wrestle around with a g/box, checking the alignment, twisting, turning, wobbling, shaking and the bugg3r won't go in, then, (after an hour ) you just breath on it and it falls into place

hi guys, i was wondering if you could help me with a list of tools and things to get together to tackle this thing, what sockets needed and would basic clarke hydraulic jack be enough for jacking the engine and the gearbox or does it have to be a certain jack? many thanks, i hope to have a go at this soon.

you will need
17mm ring spanner
17mm socket
15mm ring spanner
a allen or spline key that fits your drive shaft bolts
13mm spanner
13mm socket
clutch alignment tool ( same size as input shaft diameter - i use a old input shaft cut down)
a couple of zippy ties to hold the slave cylinder up so as not to strain the hydrolic pipe
a axle stand or second jack to support the front of the engine whilst the gearbox isnt there to hold it up
a pair of car ramps or large axle stands to lift the van up enough to get under and get gear box out of the way

im sure i forgot something.
