An odd wire......earth?

Post by Fin »

I was footering about under the van - to get a few bits sorted before Volksfest and found a Brown wire hanging loose above the passenger side swing arm - toward the petrol tank

To give you a bit of back ground, my fuel gauge hasn't worked for a while - and I thought this was the earth wire for it, after a good look round and dropping the tank, the two wires to the tank sender and plug seem to be fine.

I've traced the rogue wire back along the loom and it comes out underneath passenger side between the spare wheel holder and the frame/rail that it attaches to, there seems to be a junction
The wiring runs along the back of the rail to the drivers side (small covered wire) and forward passenger side to the main loom (fat covered wires) if that makes any sense...

So the brown wire exits the loom sleeving in between these two loom joins.

I've tried earthing it to see if it helps the gauge - but with no success

Doesn't seem to affect anything

Does anyone know what it's for, as I can't find the point where it was originally attached to the body work

Is this the subaru canverted van in your profile? could be a non used earth from the original engine. When you say swing arm do you mean the rear trailing arm? The earth point for the fuel level sender is near the sender. you would have seen this when you dropped the tank.

Nah it's up front - I know everything out back - because I fitted most of it..

I recon it's the one for the sender - do you know where it should be earthed, be nice to put it back where it should be

No It's been a long time since I dropped a tank, wiring diagrams just say earth point near sender.
