How do you change the glass in a wing mirror?

Post by tforturton »

Went out to the bus this morning, and one of my wing mirrors has been shattered. I've got an old broken one in the shed with good glass, but I can't figure out how to get the glass out of the old one and into the new. Has anyone done this? They look as though the two halves just clip together, but I can't separate them. All clues gratefully received.

Well, I managed to get the glass out of the old one, after a bit of a struggle. I used the same method to take the broken glass out of the one on the car, but unfortunately, after all that work, When i put the new glass in, i can't get it to stay in place. There don't seem to be any sort of clips or catches to hold the plastic rim in place, and so it just pops back out every time. I could try sticking it down, but that means taking the mirror off the car, and if I'm doing that an might as well buy a new one. Shame really, this is the second mirror I've lost in just a couple of months.

standard mirrors are a complete unit and when the glass breaks you change the entire unit preferably for one's that cost more than £9 if you want them to last (paint falls off in weeks) and stay in one place when driving (nut soon rusts to buggery).

convex from Brickwerks or BQ mirrors from gsf (hagus I think)

I was referring to the paint on the metal base. Eventually it flakes off after the alloy corrodes. Both my cheap mirrors went lose and sadly the tightening nuts were that corroded they snapped.
