Help. It won't start.

Post by steane »

Hey all,

So I jumped into my van to travel back to work tonight and it would not start. I get a flicker off the lights on the dash then they go out and I have nothing. If I turn the key to turn the engine over, nothing at all. I believe it is is not the battery asI got my multimeter on it and got a good reading. Don't really know where to start on the fault finding and wondered if anyone has any ideas? I am not with the van till next weekend however will try and answer any questions.

Thanks
Ben

I will check/clean connections at weekend. It has started perfect Saturday. No issue. Could dirty connections cause the above?

Do the lights work ok?
If they do it's usualy poor starter motor connections.

I have a similar prob with mine at the moment and have just discovered the cold start linkage has worn a hole in the cables going into the engine bay fuse/relay box.

Will need to get on it, I hope your is a more straight forward solution!

What was your "good reading" to start with...? 0.2 v is the difference between start and not start on mine

Not wanting to hijack this thread, but is the ignition switch separable from the ignition barrel and housing, or is it all one piece?

Its separate, but at the bottom of the barrel. Well worth having a spare to combat this breakdown. You need to drop the barrel down to get it off though, if you're replacing. Great threads on thesamba.com and no doubt here too, on removal.

Ok so, I got 5 mins with van before having to go out again. It seems nothing electrical works so that kinda rules out ignition switch. CD player normal works with no keys in. Nope. No lights. The battery is reading 12.41 volts.
