Battery will not charge

Post by Reimotim »

I have a battery, which I use as a leisure battery, but it is not a true leisure battery.

It has drained over winter and having tried to charge it with two chargers, neither will charge it.

I assume this means the battery is completely dead, but why do the chargers refuse to indicate even attempting to charge it?

Cheers

I should say so - what is/was the voltage of the battery?

The plates will have become 'sulphated' presenting a barrier to normal battery activity. During inactivity batteries should be manually re-charged every 6 - 8 weeks and prevented from freezing.
Your battery is scrap.

Following the recent thread, I got one of these...

Bit tight on height, but it does fit and the lid does (just) shut. Huge capacity.

Adrian, I though you said in a previous post that this height was really too tall and if you had your choice again you would have got something smaller?...your words not mine.

190mm is generally accepted as too tall for closed lid VW battery boxes.
The next standard low height seems to be 175mm.

Thanks guys, I knew I'd seen a thread recently.

The low height battery looks just the ticket!

Yes, I did. And I've been furtling about with the seat since then, too. It won't quite shut - but it's bearable. And I'm starting to lean towards the capacity being worth it. Oh, I dunno. I'm fickle. And forgetful.

I am minded to raise my front seats by 1/2 inch as it seems worth it to have access to a much wider range of batteries. Volkswagen were a bit mean when it came to battery height.
