I haven't seen that as a copy anywhere, have you? I dont see the relevance.
Jed
If you dont see the relevance then you should have gone to Specsavers ......
The relevance is Jed, that VW first made a spare wheel carrier for a T3. Anyone who makes a spare wheel carrier for a T3 is copying VW's idea. Most copies hinge off the C post like the original thereby 'ripping off' VW, most copies are made of tubular steel ... as was the original ... do I need to explain further?
You pointed out carriers made by Nordwest Equipment which look very like Ortecs ... you know, hinged off the C post, made of tubular steel ... not very original!
Ahhh I see. It just got me a little confused because your always going on about how your original one is soooooooo much better that the other ones available. It got me thinking that yours was different and better/different. What was it, sun loungers or deck chairs or something you called the ones that were not the ones you had and in some way not the same and not as good. Same then.

I was going to fork out for two from Jager but he is only supplying the RHS and I would have to modify them to make them work how I want anyway.
If you can make a pair, with some improvements (strengthening? other mount ideas? wheel options? single/combi lock etc) I really don't see an issue.
The materials shouldn't break the bank - it's the bending, rose ends and clamp that bump the price up. If you can buy in bulk these wouldn't be so bad.
If you can do them at a sensible price - you'll be onto a winner.
Do something like the original above and offer a ladder too and I will join others in the need to hump your leg vigourously while waving money at you. For me that is a very tidy setup.
After giving this some thought the plan would be to have a similare set up to the originals but with a larger mating surface (should be stronger) so as to accomodate various bolt on pieces of kit so will concentrae on that. This will also help to keep the weight down which for me is an important consideration. The Ortecs in their original form can accomodate bigger wheels as jaeger says " Mine is still o.k. after 9 years and 30X9,5 R 15 wheel." Not sure about the thought of you or anyone else humping my leg tho
k i s s please, that for me is the beauty of the ortec design and tried and tested - look at Mattflints, the ex KevH van etc....I've followed those vans on convoy and they work well, the wheel isn't too high or two low
cheap landie ones similar to ortecs start at £120 and go to £500 sort of money, though obviously made in much greater quantities, so a decent thing priced slap bank slap bang in the middle would be ideal
as for hanging other stuff off them let the individuals who want that do that themselves like you have
I am concerned about fixing any design of wheel carrier to the body - panel distortion etc. what experiences do people have of the different approaches to this , has anyone with a 'hinged' design such as ortec, original , 'nutz experienced this? Does anyone have the other style of fixing up the rear door liner?

Anymore takers just add your name to the list and will try and look at getting them ready for Coney
I like Ortecs if it matters.
Nothing wrong with them.
Just a pain in the ring opening the tailgate when we need to get to the engine on rear mounted carriers but that's just the genre of the rack, not a fault with the Ortecs.
Not really much choice though eh.

Hit the nail on the head in my opinion, I have one one of these designs on the camper, It had been bent too far over and had distorted the frame. It now has a plate to spread the load, fact is there is a lot of leaverage when they are swung back, Otherwise I think OK, I need to get round to putting a chain or someting on to make sure it can't happen.
...off the rear bumper and would probably fit on the DOKA, would probably have to sell THE DOKA to afford to buy them though...doh

That's confusing not "bent too far over".......I mean swung open too far so hit the stop on the bottom and distorted the frame.
