90 amp alternator.who,where and how

hi all,looking to change my old alternator for a punchy 90 amp.can anyone recommend one,and do they all fit the bracket etc.its for a 2ltr air cooled t25.mr autos are doing a 35 percent discount at the moment if you use the code ma35..thanks in advance

In theory it should be possible to fit an alternative alternator, as they all work basically the same. However, in reality the mountings, adjusting bracket, fan pulley and wiring harness will all be different and will require substantial modifications to make it fit.

In other words...anything is possible, it just depends on how much work you are prepared to do to make it work & whether the benefits outweigh the effort & cost.

Why do you need a 90A alternator?
The biggest VW fitted was a 65A more than adequate for most uses. 90A is really on the limit for the drive belt and as it drives the heater fan as well it would overload it, which is why they fitted two alternators to vehicles with high electrical demands.

I agree, I fitted a 90 A alt and found no difference.

The only time you would need it is if your firing up a seriously power hungry sound system.
It certainly won't be needed for a campervan, even with a fridge on 12V, wipers, headlights, it would cope easily.

I have now put it back to 45...

I took my fubard 65amp alternator to my local electrician who got me a replacement Lucas unit for £60. It looked brand new but I assume it was reconditioned

He took the pulley off my old one and put it on the new one too

VW don't seem to have had a problem fitting a 90A alternator off a single V-belt, including water pump, on later WBXs, so I'm not sure there's any inherent problem with the concept. Dunno whether that'd fit an air-cooled, though.

I believe they were fitted to the higher spec'd injection models weren't they ? I have one on our's and the only difference is that the pulley diameter is smaller so it needs a fractionally shorter belt.

90amp on my DF too. The guy who owned my bus had a serious sound system on board so it made sense.
