CV Boot - MOT Fail?

Quick question is a split CV Boot an MOT fail now? I was under the impression this was for front axle previously? Have the rules changed?

i would imagen it would be a fail as i have had failed an mot for a split boot in the past.

I can only see front driveshafts listed - and if it ain't down, it can't fail.

OTOH, a split boot will very soon equal a knackered joint.

well my tester was sat here 5 mins ago and rear drive shaft boot is a failure 100% as is front drive shaft boot

Can you/he point us to the bit of the tester's manual?

hes gone home. but it also falls into the same criteria as the ball joints and rack gaitors, also not every single failable item is listed, some areas are generalised,( and this is a guy that tests loads of t25.s and knows his way round them and syncros)

Except 2.4.4 starts with the qualification... "On vehicles which have a drive shaft which forms part of the suspension," - which isn't us.

So CV joint gaiters are explicitly tested if they're on the front, or if the shaft is part of the suspension - but no mention otherwise. Still doesn't mean it's a good move to leave 'em split, though...

I always failed them based on the fact that they could effect steering if they fell apart due to dirt ingress....that wouldn't apply to the rears and I suspect a degree of common sense should prevail as MOT failure points are supposed to be based on safety of the vehicle and not the likelyhood of break down.

Obviously needs doing anyway but I would have thought this could swing towards an advisory with the words urgent.

Just for info.
Had a CV boot fail on a Fiat Uno once. Super glued the split after carefully cleaning it with meths. Passed the mot ok and lasted at least 30k miles, engine died at 192k.

Thanks Martin. Not sure if my MOT guy will be as sensible. My mechanic said that rules has changed in the last couple of months. Logic says I will do it, but it is not a trivial job to change it properly .

It's a doddle IF (as with many things T25) the bolts undo ok Just a bit messy that's all.
