Outcome of Public Inquiry on Britain's Oldest Road
January 2013

Dear fans and supporters of our freedom to ride our Rights of Way

Thank you for your response to the call for action in November last year over the threat to ride a stretch of one of Britain's oldest roads, The Icknield Way http://www.icknieldwaypath.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The outcome is our favour and we have summarised the situation here which will be kep updated; http://www.hertstrf.org.uk/icknield-way-public-inquiry/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The inaugural meeting of the TRF occured on 18th January 1970 when at least to 60 riders rode the Icknield Way starting from Berkhamsted MCC clubroom.

The TRF have fought for your rights to use this lane one of the integral parts of the Herts TRF 700 km Watford to Wells weekend run as well as protect the rights of other users including horse driven carriages who would have been affected by a decision to downgrade this to a bridleway.

The Icknield Way Path runs from the end of the Ridgeway Path at Ivinghoe Beacon, near Tring, to the start of the Peddar's Way at Knettishall Heath, near Thetford, for 110 miles (177 km).

It is unique among long distance tracks because it can claim to be "the oldest road in Britain", extending from Ivinghoe Beacon in Buckinghamshire to Knettishall Heath in Norfolk.

It consists of prehistoric pathways, ancient when the Romans came. Dotted with archaeological remains, it survives as splendid tracks and green lanes along the chalk "spine" of England.
