Gear Oil

I know its been answered many times before but i just cant find it. So how much oil goes in a 5 speed box is it 3.5 l or 4 l. Sorry for asking again.

Yea i have a haynes which says 3.5l but i also have the little orange manual from just kampers which says 4l so i am still not sure. So i just need someone give a difinative answer. Please.

Fill to level with the hole ... probably ~4 litres on a 5 speed. Comma SX semi-synthetic 75W90 GL4.

VW say 4 litres diesel 3.5 litres petrol 2wd - it makes no sense to me, VW say they reduced the amount in the petrol to quicken the shift, well I'd rather have lubricant in there, you can make the shift real quick by having no oil in there but it will seize in 10 miles

so I say 4 litres regardless of engine type, 4 speed or 5 speed (4.5 litres for a syncro)

BUT this applies to a completely empty box on the floor, when you put the oil in before you fit the gearbox to the van, you put in a measured amount - if it is in the van then fill it till it overflows the filler with the van level, that will be about 4.3 litres in reality in a 5 speed, as you can't drain all the oil with the box in the van, it may be slightly too much and you may get a wet end of the gearbox if you live on a hill as a small amount may come out of the breather hole but better too much than too little imho

Thanks for the info guys got 4l into it today. I now know why it s suggested that you attatch the funnel to the rear grills after standing in the freezing cold for 25 mins holding a funnel in the air waiting for 4l of cold gear oil to slowley make its way down the tube to the box.

Could try putting the bottles in a bucket of warm water first for a bit, when I recently did mine I followed someones advice and rested the bottle with tube above the engine bay and spent my 25 mins inside with a cup of tea.

Was offered the use of a syringe from work but being very clever i said naaaaa ill be fine and i was, just very cold with lots of thinking time to realize my mistake. What i should have done is got my mum to hold the funnel.
