Ok, so in the interest of double checking stuff, I ran the engine and wiggled some hoses etc.

I leant over the engine towards the back right hand side and wiggled the rubber hose that seems to come from the front of the engine and joins the block by the back spark plug, it split and didn't have squirt about the place.

Problem found I think. Its split just above the jubilee clip. I need to replace it, what would I call it if trying to order one ?

Your description isn't the best but if you browse this section of the Brickwerks website .. http://www.brickwerks.co.uk/shop?page=s ... ory_id=118 you should find the one you're after.

It's this one .. http://www.brickwerks.co.uk/shop?page=s ... ory_id=118

on a late system.

At '83 your's should be an early system ... so this http://www.brickwerks.co.uk/shop?page=s ... ory_id=118 or this .. http://www.brickwerks.co.uk/shop?page=s ... ct_id=1483

I'll try and better describe better as the exploded diagrams dont seem to help much.

The hose is a 25mm hose. As you look into the engine bay from the tailgate looking towards the front of the van, this hose is at the back of the engine, right hand side and joins the cylinder block quite low down at spark plug height. The hose attaches and bends downwards and seems to head off towards the front of the vehicle but I cant be sure that is where it goes. There only seem to be two coolant hoses of this size on this side of the engine.

Its not the larger pipes that run around the back of the engine bay.

I hope this helps , the pics I find on the internet (non porN) dont really help :/

Heater matrix hose? Early DGs have (iirc) two pairs of 'front to rear' hoses.... larger diameter ones to/from radiator and smaller (would be about 25mm) ones to/from heater matrix....

The Dalek Cap

Image

It's the blue (or if it's an old one black) cap on the top of the header tank which allows excess coolant pressure to pass through a valve along a hose to the top-up tank (which is behind the cat flap) and then as the system cools it sucks the coolant back along the hose into the header tank thus 'topping up' the header tank. If this fails shut (and they are renown for it) the system can over-pressure blowing hoses, cracking plastic parts etc or if it fails open the system never pressures up properly and the coolant can boil also causing damage. The products that people stick in their cooling systems to stop drips upsets it's delicate metabolism

ALWAYS buy the more expensive Brickwerks one http://www.brickwerks.co.uk/shop?page=s ... ory_id=118 ... NEVER buy the GSF one cos they are pants.

After a good run when the engine's nice and hot look behind the cat flap ... does the top-up tank level get above 'Max' and when it cools down again go back to 'Max' ? That's what should be happening if the cap's ok.

stick the pipe bit in your gob.you should be able to blow through it.if you can suck air through it.then its knacked.(oh yeh remove it from the tank first)
