Are you talking about a roll out awning or a drive away awning? All roll out awnings will need to be fixed to the van so will need some sort of drilling. Drive away awnings usually come with some sort of clip and / or chord arragement so aren't fixed and are basically a free standing tent.

The awning rail on my camper is attached with clamps to the roof gutter so there was no need for drilling, we use a roll out awning for everyday use (Stowed in it's own bag that attaches to the awning rail) but slide this off when we go for extended holidays so we can use the rail for our drive away awning

You can just see the rail and it's attachments in these photos...(Note to self take more detailed pictures of the rail and mounts)

The curved piece that is sticking up in the third photo is part of the clamp that holds the roll out awning "bag" it has a strap that secures the awning whilst speeding down the motorway!! :rollin

For £100 its superb. 3 clamps secure the tunnel to the gutter on the van. Big enough to leave table & chairs in when we went out for the day. Well immpressed :ok
