2.5 tdi

Post by jes*b »

what are the pro's and cons of going to the effort of fitting a 2.5 tdi, I am assuming that the additional stress on the gear box would be an issue but how does this stack up against a pepped up AFN ? is the actual install a total night mare i.e. mating it to the box and the engine mounts? any thoughts gratefully received

Have you read the Limey thread on the Samba?

The guys who did my conversion aswell as a few others on here reckons they have a lot more issues than the 1.9. I'm sure he said something about camshaft problems.

Have you driven a 1.9 TDI with a VNT and bigger nozzles? If that isn't enough power than you still have the option of a remap.

How about a 1.9 PD? My A6 has 300nm of torque as standard.

Tom cheers - I have flirted with the samba but not really got the energy for the raft of stuff on there. Not after more power or anything butch, not my style. It's just I have happened across a low mileage Audi powered by the 2.5 tdi, thought I might get it on the shelf for a rainy day. But if it's a ball ache I shall steer clear. No other engines have turned up , I'm out of pocket and no signs of a resolution.
Aidan - is that a typo ? As above no clearer on giving you a steer on the box. Really not best please at the mo.

Shoulda bought my spare AFN before I broke it up?
Although I did find an amazing thread on thesamba where a guy (Andrew Libby) fitted a VNT15 to a JX  used a mechanical control which I think he's selling. Apparently it flies.

Lloyd - I know someone who would be very interested in reading that thread got a link?

I am such a novice with engines I really wanted to buy a car and go about removing everything I needed for the 'tutorial' factor. That's now plan A again.

Hey Tom ...didn't know you had an A6.

I've had one since October....swopped from a 5 series. I can honestly say its the best car I've ever had...I think it's brilliant.

Andrew Libby is quite a good source for anything diesel, he posts a fair bit on Samba and runs a vanagon himself. You will also find him on here http://www.vwdiesel.net/forum/index.php?board=6.0 and he has done a couple of good write ups on modding stuff.

Jes, seriously you don't need any more power than an AFN or equivalent provides.

From what I know of Limey and the costs involved I wouldn't ever bother. Also says something that MG has swapped Limey to a 20v petrol since....

I've also been following those mechanical VNT posts for a while, interested myself...

Went to look at the motor today , couldn't start and looks like someone been having electrical issues so non starter . Shame as besides scabbing the engine from it it was a sweet original a6 with about 20 stamps in the service book. Shame, search goes on. Ideally a sharan AFN. Feelers out etdi- ers

Jes, pull y'self together ! Life's too short, sling an AFN or summat standard in there and enjoy ! It's plenty enough for the van/gearbox.

IIRC MG's conclusion after all the absurd lengths/cost he went to with the 2.5 was that it wasn't worth it !

Customer of mine is just doing a Sharan AFN, it has its own VNT15 version, he reckons with JX ex mani and adapter plates/lines its bolt-together. Remains to be seen how much turbo smokes though.

yep sound advice guys , I am on the AFN hunt, wasn't really considering the 2.5 its was just worth a look as not often you find something with a fully stamped up book. it ended up selling for more than i would have paid anyway.
