2.0 Aircooled barrel / head seals

2.0 Aircooled barrel / head seals
HELP !!! Just dropped engine and removed one head from my T25 trying to find a running problem.I have found no seals between barrels and head, would this be due to a bad rebuild somewhere along the line or do some engines not have them ( ie. face-fit )? There are signs of "blow-by" on both, which I'm hoping is my problem.

They don't need any. I've known others use grinding paste to get a better seal by rotating barrel against head but i've never had to.

As above they are made to such tolarencies they done need them
1983 ,2.0l Aircooled ,home brew hightop camper.

Ok thanks for that, was hoping not to disturb the barrels but should have guessed I wouldn't be that lucky !!

If the heads are AMC heads they have a sealing step cut into them so you dont use the sealing rings. If they are factory vw heads the workshop books say use them. As said above, use a bit of valve grinding paste on the top of the cylinder and lap it to the head.

There are no gaskets as such, there may or may not be "decompression rings", depends on head/barrel/engine build.
Blow-by would suggest that the head was not correctly torqued down or had worked loose, always a good idea to remove head nuts with a torque wrench so you can see how tight they were, but as a guide, they should have been very tight, if they came off easily, then that's the source of your problem.
