autohomes model confusion

Post by sweaty »

In need of an autohomes expert to answer a nagging question.....like what model of camper do i have? Emblazed down the side is the word 'Kamper' Surely I've answered my own question? No. To my undersatnding I have the wrong roof on! In all the literature I've read the models are identified by the shape of the roof. Mine has a high top for head room and storage, i.e 2 berth. Not the really high roof with with a bed in it and not the rigid pop top iether. As far as I'm aware I have the Kameo roof? Square cornered/rectangle roof windows, not tapered ones. It' s a 1984 automatic 1.9, 2 owners from new. i can't imagine the last owner had the decals swapped for the wrong ones, nor that the roof has been changed........ Now I've spotted on ebay another high top with what I would say was a Komet roof but with kamper decals! Whats going on? Oh and I've just tried to add a pic of my camper which will help. Image

it's a kamper that's had replacement roof later in it's life, possibly by autohomes, possibly by another company - you'll find slight descrepancies in the trim between the roof and below, my old bus Mustard Pot is like that, it had an EMC high top fitted when the Kamper roof became a bit leaky following a prolonged lay up during someone's messy divorce a couple of owners before me.

You seem so sure. Did you consider it could have had different graphics applied as it's been sprayed a couple of times? The cupboards above and below are an exact match. The trim between roof and hi top was stolen recently so I can't compare with an original. If the roof is not as old as the van it's not wearing very well, i.e cracking and shelling in the gutter area. Could have been a second hand roof ofcourse. Not suggesting your wrong but I need a little more convincing Seems odd this camper on ebay has a simular roof/graphics combination. Interesting, thanx for your reply.

Autohomes did several models. To my knowledge four. Kamper, Kameo, Karisma and Komet. The Kamper was the solid sided pop top version, the Karisma and Kameo were solid high tops with storage rather than a bed and the Komet was the solid high top with a bed. There is a slight difference between the Kameo and Karisma tops. Internally they were all pretty much the same below roof height, although the furniture changed around the late eighties.

Scroll down this ebay listing for a good set of pictures of the later square headlight/wrap around bumper versions

@ TheDuke
Sorry mate, that's not a Komet; not even an Autohomes roof Correction: sorry it's a Karisma roof, didn't recognise it from that angle and getting confused with the Kameo  .
I think I saw that on ebay a few days ago but I can't remember what the interior is like. People put badges/stickers on things to make them easier to sell/more expensive usually but this might be as simple as mistaken identity. Need to see the interior really.....

id say 1664 is spot on.I see many of autohomes kampers that have had the original roof removed as there well known to rot.The kamper was the push up roof. Not sure if the decals are wrong or the roof is,like already been said people put the wrong names on to try to add value. But i wouldnt say thats happened on this one.The decals look original. But so does the roof.List some more pics of the interior, please,i like a puzzle!I may be wrong but i think the differnce between the karsmia and kameo was the karsima had hot water and a tv or one of the other.Ive got 4 genuine komets at the moment and one kameo.I think the autohomes had the best looking roofs of all the conversions,i think the late kameo has a very nice roof indeed(eye candy)
We should all start to live before we get too old. Fear is stupid. So are regrets.

My van started out as a Kamper Mk II, but in the receipts I got with it is one from 1997 for fitting a "VWT2" high-top by Autocraft Motor Caravans. Everything else still looks the same inside as it should according to this, except the buddy seat is long gone:-
