Would your bet be on the cv joints

Post by Sir Brixalot »

Thought everything was done but.. when setting off I hear a noise that is a combination of a clang/spring sound fom underneath, I can't pinpoint where the noise is coming from. The noise then turns into a repetitive loud click with speeds up as the van does. It is intermittent, I have taken the van twice to the garage but typically on those days the noise hasn't happened, the garage has has it on the ramp but can't find anything wrong. My best guess is that a cv joint had gone. Does this sound likely.

Did you get to the bottom of this? I've got the same repetitive click, and like you I haven't managed to get it to my garage when it's making the noise ( seems to stop midway through the 30 mile journey then come back a week or so later). It's driving me round the bend!! Always starts fairly quiet for a day or so and gets louder and louder over the next couple of days to the extent it becomes undrivable. Set off for the garage and within 20 miles its stopped....only for it to return later....

Hello,

Sounds like CV joints.

Changing them is no big deal....

This video may help..:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=meTNBph3rUU

The problem is often that either the bolts are working loose, or that the CV's themselves are without grease or worn out,

Further fun is guaranteed , because the PO may well have simply inverted the shaft in the past when the outer (usually) went..

Buy proper OE, see Brickwerks,..

If necessary invest in a really good quality Allen key , or splined key to be sure of getting the old bolts off without hassle..

Cordialement..

one easy way to test is to jiggle the drive shafts too and fro, do them one at a time. usually if the grease gets moved about it will stop for a while and will tell you if thats the problem and on which side it is.

ive done mine on both my vans, on the first one i just turned the shafts over so they are driving the opposite way and repacked the grease, make sure its the right grease. never had to touch them again. in my experience the outers tend to go first

Thanks for the advice. Noise is still intermittent. Haven't had time or funds to get them checked yet. Will get back to you in the new year. Gogsol did you get to the bottom of it? Dazzer, just got back from your neck of the woods - had a few days in very Christmassy and rainy Chester.

Hi, cv joints on drivers side replaced, will let you know if that solves it. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, as no idea what else it could be!

Cheers.
