Starting problem

Post by Trunkster »

GRRRRH van wont start! I put a new batery on it a couple of weeks ago and it has been great. Yesterday it would not start. The starter motor is turning over but a bit slow so I thought the batery was a bit low. I charged the batery up and today it wont start still. Starter turning over but wont even try to fire. Put more fuel in just in case but nothing. I pulled my v8 4.7 jeep along side and tried to jump it. Nothing! still sounds as if the starter is too slow. Normally when I have jumped from the jeep in the past you can hear the noise of the jeep change when under load but still nothing. I disconected the batery and put heavy duty leeds straight to the van power leeds and it hardly turned over. I had the starter reconditioned a few monthes ago so i didn't think it could be that. There is no petrol smell iether which I was suprised at! Any one have any idears please. 2L air cooled.
If in doubt give it a clout!

usual suspects..

poor earth (G'box nose strap, battery earth)
poor connections on Starter)
worn starter bush (in bell housing )
crumbling braided wire from the solenoid to starter

Ive just had exactly the same issues - put in new battery, plugs and leads to no avail.. Had a mechanic out and he is saying its the fuel pump - might be worth looking at!

have you checked the earth strap on the gear box, i had similar symptoms, easy check is to connect a jump lead between the engine casing and the body of the van, i went from a convenient clean bit of engine to the tow ball.
