it could have been robbed for bits...or more likely ? someone has just replaced bits with whatever was available at a price.
its still a cheap van if the big oily bits work well....
i bought mine blind off ebay...i didnt test the eber, fridge, hook-up as I didnt know enough about them....but good advice to check first ...then at least you are going in with your eyes open.
good tip to ask the seller to chill the fridge.

Thats is the most likely explanation
The seller said it was an old guy who owned it so I would have a guess that the bumpers were replaced for metal ones as they are stronger, maybe the big plastic bumpers had too many splits and dinks in them
the seller doesn't know much about what should be there or shouldn't be there, whats been changed etc,the seller does seem genuine enough after all he wouldn't go out and take pictures of the random things that i have asked him for (via here)
I will ring the seller later and delv a bit deeper to what he knows etc
my main worry is now is my interest is dwindling a bit in this, with all the negative posts that have been said, from my point of view I have a budget yes its not a big one by vw standards,I don't want to go down the restoration route as i don't have the room, time, equipment, expertise nor the budget,i am on ebay and the others everyday, and there aint many under £2500 that are half decent and solid(ish),just now on ebay there is 5 californias they range in price from £8749 - £10995 and the 2 dearest ones have been repainted (not even put the transfers back on) so I think mine thats going to cost me somewhere in the region of £3000 all in (without haggling) stands me in good stead
bodywork wise not too bothered my mate is a car sprayer, body repairer by trade, proper oven etc

If your budget is £3k, and you don't want to get into serious work, start looking a LOT wider than Westfalias, and stop worrying about repaints and stickers. Seriously.

thats not too say once i have bought it I aint going to throw money at
I am not worrying about repaints and stickers, all I am saying is the 2 dearest ones I have seen have both been repainted, and after all that theve not even bothered to put the transfers on saying what it is

i would walk away there are to many negatives, as someone else has said better of looking elsewhere than wesfalias as you will get alot more for your money , there are good ones out there my friend this year bought an original devon for £2200, i have one in original paint for sale but sadly i want more than your budget , keep looking one will turn up
Re: what gearbox should a 1990 1.6 jx td have
why a westy?
have you had a camper before?
buy something in the uk , ready to go , anything around 3-4k if looked after will be worth the same next year , when you have been out driving and camping.
at least you will of had a chance to chat / meet / lookover some vans at meets , compare to what you have and can aim at something more pratical to your needs.

After 20+ years, it's not a great surprise.
and after all that theve not even bothered to put the transfers on saying what it is
Personal preference, surely? I've been toying with the idea of removing the stickers from ours. If it was being painted, they certainly wouldn't go back on...
