KL78 All terrain

Post by robobobo »

Hi
In preperation for winter my 15" mefros are on order. Iv'e read all the posts i can about tyre's and can see the benefits of the bfg 215/75/15s ta in everyones reviews.

My wallet obviously prefers the price of the Kumho KL78s , has anyone got any direct experience of these tyres? They are available in 195/80/15 or 215/80/15. I am a syncro owner in a high rise so will only have the 1 set of tyres all year round with 90% of my journeys on the road. Though when i hit the hills I like to camp or search for surf in some out the way places on extended holidays.

It sounds like 195s are best for my stock gearing but so many people use 215 that i'm a bit confused. Is this primarily as the BFG's are only available in 215/75/15 ie if they were available in 195 would that be a preferable size.

Sorry to cover old ground but it would be nice to hear from anyone who has actually used these tyre's or has any other recommendations.

ta :ok

i would recomend a set of general grabbers 215 75 15, i have had a set on my doka and my heavy camper and i have never been put in a situation where i have wanted something else, they are fantastic on the road with absolutely no road noise, off road in whatever i throw at them be it mud, rocks ,sand or wet grass they do everything i ask of them and now they have proved themselves on snow and ice, a tried and tested fantastic AT tyre

And a good bit cheaper than BFGs, by the look of things.

Thanks jason, they look the business and are certainly more wallet friendly. Sounds like a good recommendation. Have you had them on for long?

Anyone else got any experience of these or other ATs. Be nice to know how they compare to BFg's in the long run. Be a nice saving but i plan on keeping my van for the long run, would it be a false economy.

cheers

i`ve had them on for about a year, regularly rotate them and the tyre wear rate is not bad at all

At the moment, my syncro has Kumho Radial 857s, but they were on the car when I bought it. They've still got a fair bit of wear on them, but I'm hoping to upgrade to 15" Mefros next year, so have been checking out all the different tyre options. Unlike a lot of people, I actually like the white lettering on the sidewalls, so was disappointed to see the Generals didn't have it. They also look surprisingly low profile. Maybe it's just a stock picture....

I run 225 75 15 M/S on my panel. Ride height, gearing is fine.(7j alloys)
I'm not sure 225's are good on Mefro's (15" 6j) ???

I have the 215/75/15 Grabber AT2's that I bought part-worn from Axeman, great tyre in everything but slick icy conditions, a bit draggy on the road but there's probably far worse. Gearing depends on what diffs you have, my basic 6-seat bus has 4.86 final drive which results in a pretty long 20mph/1000rpm, a bit slow in 3rd and top for a petrol but nice when cruising. Fine offroad so far though.

Ideally, what you need (at least the way I see it) is a wheel and tyre combination which gives you the same gearing as you would have with the original stock wheels/tyres. Or am I wrong? If that is the target, then which is the best size to fit to a 15inch wheel?

looks like 2157515 is less than 5% off which is about as close as you can get
