On your own with great care and a very good trolley jack, engine supported at a slight down-angle ... much better with 2 sets of eyes and hands to maul the box back onto the jack under the van and turning a driveshaft flange to align the splines if summat moves.

is it common for the fork to break in the box at this age?
also, what bits should i get together so i have everything i need, clutch kit with pressure plate, spigot bearing, also should i get a clutch disc ready and take it back if it's not needed? i have a 1.9 DG engine, should i get the gearbox number to make sure what bits to get?

Gearbox number will be illegible, chassis number or registration may be enough. You get a 3 piece clutch kit, a search will reveal lots of previous advice ... I remember typing it out at least twice for certain.
