Before writing off the battery you also need to carry out a system charge check just in case you have another issue causing the battery to go flat ie: a duff regulator brush pack, corroded battery terminal or bad earth.

Just got my new battery (Bosch 096) and have given it 24hrs charge, now seeing 14.07 volts..Wow!!!
The one I removed is 11.86v .. Not so clever but still she starts perfectly?
As you mentioned while I was there thought I'd clean the earth cable connection as it dis look a bit rusty, but I did notice that my socket was making little sparks as I undid the bolt .... Should I have????

Just fitted the battery but on my digital volt meter instantly I'm showing 12.60v... Does this mean I have a leak of some sort ????? I did expect to see the big numbers!!!
If it was 14.07 immediately after removing the charger thats normal as it's the 'residue' voltage left by the charger voltage. If you left your meter connected you would have seen the voltage slowly dropping until it reached the actual battery voltage - in this case 12.6 which if you look at the chart is fine.
