Indicators not working

Post by discipleofsketch »

Hi All,

Wife's first drive in the van last night, and apart from the dashboard light not working (possibly related?), also discovered that the indicators have stopped working. The hazards still work, but using the indicator just causes the green light on the dash to light up without flashing, no ticking, no indicator. It does tick once when you switch the ignition on (when the indicator is on).

I can't see any fuses gone in the box behind the glovebox. Before I go ordering a new indicator relay, what else might be causing this?

cheers

Rick

I was just about to do that but noticed there was loads of other weirdness going on - blower switching off when headlights turned on, coolant sensor light flashing in time with the hazards amongst other things! Was on the verge of calling out an auto-electrician when I found a wire dangling down behind the glove box with a spade connector not attached to anything, so took a chance and attached it to a spare connector one of the earth crowns, and ... touch wood ... it's all working again - indicators, dash lights, headlights at the same time as the blower etc.

I'm half convinced that it is fixed because I inadvertently prodded something else while fumbling around under there - need to go and check it again later and take it for a drive to make sure. If it is definitely fixed then I will feel very pleased with myself!

Bad earths in the dash area can cause all sorts of weirdness...I had issues with my headlights not coming on even though tail lights were...and the full beam light stayed on regardless of whether I had full beam or not. Fairly quickly tracted to a dodgy earth connection on the main crown - a previous owner haddone a dodgy job of replacing some of the wires with thr wrong guage so it had overheated and caused a bad contact. Easily sorted with new wire and now all is good. I say easily 'cos CamperShack did it for me! (Only 'cos it was there anyway...I would normally tackle this sort of thing myself!).

A ceramic type fuse with a hairline crack in the metal that you don't see at first glance (or poor connection) can cause identical symptoms.

I've just almost identical thing happening - indicators are OK until lights are on.

I'll get Graham at the garage to have a look at the earthing behind the dash (I'm asking him to reconnect the worm screw thing for the mileage counter anyhoo, so he'll be going in there).

I'm glad I did a search in here and found this thread, thanks

Very similar indicator behaviour with ours lately - but only very occasionally. When it does it, a light slap on the fusebox cover seems to sort it, so my guess is the relay's sticking. There's no correlation with any other lights being on or off that I've noticed.
