cu to ahu 1z mtdi help please

Post by ultraviolent »

Please bare with me, I've had my t25 for a very long time but I'm a bit of a novice with the engine and box etc.

So, I currently have a 4 speed cu Aircooled, I'm wanting to fit a ahu 1z engine.

I will get rid of the ecu, replace the pump with a 2.5 Tdi landy pump making the engine a mtdi. That's the wiring sorted,

Next up is the flywheel and box. I don't mind 4 speed petty ratios but will the box bolt to the engine, do the bolts line up, I'm sure the flywheel will fit??

Also, what mounts am I looking for? Do I need to fabricate some?

I'll do the usual, switch to a tilted sump, rocker cover if needI have tilted oil filter housing etc.
I'll stick a rad up front and some very very long hoses.

Anything else I need to consider? Tilting the turbo so it drains its oil correctly?

I also have an Audi 80 Tdi box, would this help, again war mounts? And of course the drive shafts, the Audi box is 100mm flanges, do the t25 drive shafts bolt up in the same way?

Don't want to sound like a grump but peeps post same q on a regular basis, think people get bored answering it.

Very quickly you will need EVERYTHING from a Diesel engine except block head and pump.It miss a fairly substantive list.

Diesel parts command a premium.

I know first hand of a couple of bods with midi pumps, one swapped it to ecu and the other isn't 100% happy with performance. For the effort/hassle its not that difficult putting an ecu in. If you are competent enought to do the mechanics you can do the electrics.

It isn't the same as an AAZ swap if ou already have a jx. Look in this section and in wiki, plenty of answers, I know I have answered the same a million times over now. Read, read and read some more.

Budget 2k if you are doing it yourself as rock bottom MINIMUM. Unless you are particularly attached to your van or its desirable etc its worth considering selling a buying a diesel as a base.

Er, no, audi box won't fit (short and easy answer but anything is possible with money thrown at it ) rowelsey is fitting a transverse 2wd box in his Doka, tim shuttle flips inline boxes.

The fact you are asking some of these q's would make me ask wether you think you are mechanically competent to do the job. No offence meant but maybe you should/would have to add some Money to the budget for paying professionals. :ok

What about the fuel system change....that must be a buggy on its own.
Does an aircoled have a grill for a Rad....

Loads of questions to answer before you may come to the conclusion that's its just too much work.

Hells, just re read this Keith, didnt click it was Aircooled (as i say , so many ask same Q you end up skim reading them  )

Unless you have a lot of time and patience and money and skill DONT BOTHER.

Converting WBX to diesel/gti spec is straight forward'ish but still involved.

Aircooled? Once you have run pipes thr you have to install rad, thats once you have sourced EVERY SINGLE clip/braket/bolt etc then measured lots to get them in place (not forgetting cutting hole, dressing edges for factory finish then painting it.

Heater? Yeah, just rip the dash out , put in heater box, plumbing, controls, wbx dash etc etc etc.

As previous you are opening a very time consuming and costly can of worms IMHO

Dont panic mate, i know what its like when people keep asking the same question over and over, it gets boring. but ive spent 3 days researching this and theres no info.

im assuming you havent seen my other vw projects on other forums, i like to think outside the box,..... cost will be ALOT less then estimated above, the sale of the cu engine should just about cover it. depending on me getting a bell housing and the correct engine mounts, thats all i need to purchase, i have everything else sat in the workshop.

the priciest part will be sourcing jx bell housing and input shaft, everything else will come from donor vehicles, inlet angles for turbos can be machined to fit, infact pretty much everything can be machined and built. fitting the water hoses and front rad is literally a sunday afternoon job and really isnt an issue in the conversion,. the fuel system can easily be replaced, ive done loads and loads of reading but everyone seems to be a bit frightened of chucking their old aircolled out and replacing it with a tdi. i want an mtdi and a k14 turbo so i can try and hit the 150bhp mark, the sort of power which should be in this 2 ton truck. im too attached to the van to get rid of it and hate this little Aircooled buisness so im going to go ahead and hit this project.

i just wondered, if, out there, anyone has done the conversion already, ignoring the pump etc, wondered if anyone knew if my Aircooled mounts would help, or if its just the jx mounts i need,.

Sorry....not seen your other stuff.

Based on the questions you asked I wrongly assumed you were a novice ...running the risk of getting in too deep.

Be sure to post up the pictures when you have it sorted......especially interested with how you get on with the Audi gearbox.

Why not go etdi....the way that the engine was intended to run....and dispense with the land rover pump.?

i was building an mtdi already for a mk1 caddy, but decided ive missed my devon too much so i want to slam it in there, so i have most of the parts i need, the oil feed pipe and such like i can just make to the correct length at work. not an issue, same with the water hoses etc. the mtdi is virtually built and just sat there. i wanted to make sure i had all the info i need and all the parts i need before i destroy my van,.

last things to figure out are mounts, and fitting the motor to my current gearbox. once im happy i know what im doing with these i can get stuck in.....

thanks for replying by the way, i think alot of people have skim read what im trying to do and assume im simply upgrading from a jx or a water cooled petrol. but it seems im taking a large leap between the two.

i really just want my van as a daily, and with this non Christian Aircooled wizardry i just cant have fun with it.

Not a huge leap, its WBX to diesel but with a rad fitted as well.........

Chap called Ryan from down my way did it, his user name has got Ryan in it but don't know what it is...... I have done WBX to diesel and its easy enough. My mate has done it on his Devon. Don't suppose you live in Devon do you? Can hook you up with him to have a noses.

As well as bell housing and input shaft you need to source engine bars, mounts - although NS needs fabbing , all the engine bay hoses jx sump or a NA one and adapt it for return etc etc etc make sure you get the rubber blocks and the long bolts if you buy secondhand as all adds up if bits missing.

You will also need exhaust hangers for sump.

Are you going upright, 15' or 50' ?

Motor will fit to a jx bell housing but obviously be at 50 but that gives hatch clearance.cheapest easier clutch is full jx set up including starter.

Rad and hoses are definitely not a Sunday afternoon job, you have to drop the tank to fit them ( unless there is a tear in the time/space continuem on your Sundays!)

Stuff like the starter, you have to use a td one and use a jx flywheel or use tdi starter/flywheel etc and get adapter for starter, some combinations require maching for flywheel , all will require expenditure. You can also go tdi input shaft designed for t3 box. You will also have to buy a clutch assembly.

Would seriously consider against mtdi. If you a competent enough to do the conversion yourself, got full etdi. Have wired up three tdi conversions now and quite easy, just time consuming.

Feel free to pm me for me number, i am no expert but happy to help if I can!
