Stereo stopped working

Well that's a bummer, whilst listening to my stereo, it flashed 3 or 4 times then died

No buttons work, nada. Won't eject cd, nothing

Checked fuses, all ok,

Weird, never had a car stereo pack up before, I even presses the little reset button. Again nothing.

Anyone else had one go, it's a Sony xplod jobby,

Gona head to halfrauds tonight and get a kenwood.

Have you had a multimeter on the 12 volt feed wires (usually red for main power and yellow for backup supply) ?

Was it wired to the main van electrics or the leisure battery ?

Were you driving or ticking over at the time it happened ?

I have good reasons for asking

Yes had multimeter and getting 8.7v to the head unit on both red and yellow wires.

I took unit out and "hard wired" it to a spare battery I have, and I get nothing exactly the same.


So, my thoughts are.....not getting 12v through red or yellow so perhaps it's wired to leisure battery after all,
Should have done something connected directly to spare battery?

What voltage across the terminals?
12V batteries are considered dead and gone down beyond 10 Volts. never to recover properly
the unit simply stopped working with such little voltage

is the spare charged?

Yes correct, but as I said, I tried it on a 12v strong battery, that I have spare, I tried the head unit on it in my kitchen, and still nothing.


I was wondering ghosts thoughts on the questions e asked

Thoughts are =

A) = Is it really dead ? - But as long as you wired the Red & Yellow and the earth up correctly to a good 12 volts and it is still dead then likely it is dead !)

B) = I was wishing to check whether the input voltage (which it now appears has "issues") was coming from main battery or leisure, as, if leisure, you could have a wiring / connections / battery / issues (less likely on main battery as engine was running)

C) = Modern radios can get damaged by unstable voltages. Poor connections and duff alternator voltage regulators can cause this and are much more likely to do so when driving rather than sat on the drove ticking over. A jolt of static can damage them in the same way, which is why anyone using electric welders should disconnect the radio before starting.

I would check your wiring before connecting a new one up, as Kev points out, the voltage you are getting is way out of the normal 12.4 to 12.8 volt norm. (E D I T = 13.6 to 14.5 when the engine is running)

Hope you get it sorted, I am lost without Radio 4 on quietly as I drive

i have had a bit more time today to have a look, its a tad more complicated than i thought, firstly, my leisure battery is down 8.2ishv but 13. something started, the van battery is 12.something off 13. something running, so all good on that side, i hope

heres the issue i think is the problem,

my van has a cobra immobiliser which when pressed isolates the battery completely, as it should, if you dont press it, the battery drains?? dont know why.

it would seem, the yellow wire of stereo is connected to the immobiliser side of the battery
and the red is connected to a separate live not affected by the immobiliser, but not enough power to power up the stereo??? it just pulsate/flashes the stereo as if its acting like a immobiliser flasing led,

so when it went off the other day, the van was running, so what the hell im totally confused,

behind the dash, whoever wired all this together clearly only had red and brown cable, as thats everywhere including wires to the speakers
and because if this, its very very difficult to say whats what without removing the dash completely.

the other is ok.

good news is your alternator is working...but that too is low..14 would be better

Thanks for that Kev, it now makes sense.

After a right rave and general fanny about, it seems, one power lead is connected separate to the vans battery, and to the leisure, which we have now established is kapoot, so there's why with power off I get 8v and decreasing reading
Yet when truck running, not ticking over though, the power on the head unit it 12v.
