Subaru Power steering question

Post by mrmule »

My caravelle didnt have factory PS so I removed it when I did the Ej25 conversion.

This engine is now going in my Doka however, which does have factory PS.

Question: Do the factory VW power steering hoses reach and bolt straight on to the Subaru PS pump? If not, what modifications do I need to make/parts do I need?

Thanks in advance...

Why not just fit a Saxo electric pump?

Because the only query is the hose connections - everything else is present!!!!

Subaru pump banjos are smaller than vw ones and pump is on left top of engine so the vw ones won't fit/reach
Ideally you want the VW ones reterminated or adapter/extension pipes made, that way you can retain the VW rear high pressure pipe with the noise reducer in it, otherwise you may find the system is noisier with plain pipes from Pirtek

Thanks all.

Anyone care to share what they've actually done, and whether it works well, or whether you'd change anything if doing again?

EJ25 pipes knocked up by pirtek for £160 and are spot on , no noise unless at full lock , imho it feels miles better than the power steering from the jx but then i think my pump was on its way out .

Samuel, I've got this job pending on my 1990 bus but may have to wait until the spring. I was going to re-route the hoses over the transmission and engine to get the reach, then make up an adaptor for the HP side. It needs to go from 14mm on the pump up to 16mm for the VW hose fitting. Not sure if there's enough hose length to get away with it though.

Cool ian. Let me know how you get on. I won't likely put the ej25 in the doka until about May time so would be nice to know if you managed it.

Are you putting a scuby in the Syncro or SA?

Scooby in the SA?!!! Well funnily enough no but yes...it's a re-work of my early TSR converted small-window Microbus (the one in my avatar), the hacked-about loom has given endless grief with it's running problems so I've bought a 1996 Legacy to re-do the whole thing. I'm sick of trying to diagnose what's wrong with it and no-one's going to touch a bodged 22 year-old loom...

Are both the feed and return both 14mm the Subaru and 16mm on the VW?

vw is one 16mm, one 18mm of course, nothing straightforward
subaru only has the one high pressure fitting as the reservoir feed directly into the pump, no hose connection

I must've got the sizes mixed up with the "other" ZF pump I have here. It can't be beyond the wit of man to plumb it and not end up with it hissing like a grumpy gander.
