Garage probably won't know what you are talking about VC wise; Edinburgh is a helluva long way to go for a VC check.
Nobody we know has really the 'proper' equipment to check a VC out of a vehicle, some think they can, so that's fine, I think SDP knew what they were doing in production, and that's a fair bit of kit they used (Temp~Time~Torque realtime datarecorder)

Cooper, a 'local garage' will in all likelihood go all voodoo on you and charge you a load of cash for a load of waffle.
In all probability even a VAG garage wont have anyone old enough left to know what a t25 syncro is let alone whether the VC 'works' and they would likely have to read the manual, phone a friend or even contact this forum for proper advice; that advice would be 'find a friendly experienced syncro owner round your way, make contact and use their expertise' you will be blown away by how insightful and enthusiastic a lot of the members on here are and a couple of tins of beer are all it costs for a word from the wise, but even that is optional!

Ahem...permission to speak...the dealers have no manuals covering syncro drivetrains anymore and like you say most wont even know the engines at the back!

cooper, there are loads of good films on you tube on how to test and rebuild a VC, that would be a good place to start and would give you an idea what to expect then you just need to source the seals and silicon and get on with it, the worst that can happen is that you end up with a screwed VC and from what your saying you´ve got that already

I'll calrify what i said above..
Nobody we know has really the 'proper' equipment to check a VC out of a vehicle, apart from Dorfbrunnen.
Checking a vehicle's VC as installed is very much a subjective and qualitative judgement especially as they change performance and behaviour 'on the fly' as we have found many times at events, working OK one minute and then not the next, as well as fully failed, partly failed, failed this way and failed that way (open and closed).
Hopefully can give you a good idea though, if you need to take it further or not (the concern about it)

I recon that after a good drive, if your VC will pull the van out of the MOT rollers
Given a slow increase in rpm up to about 1500rpm in G gear, Then I'd be happy with it.
Once the temp goes up in an off road situation it will become faster to kick in
Unless its gone over the edge and on its way out, but driving off road is the true test.
I will be putting a new MOT on mine tomorrow so will let you know how mine responds

Yeh i dont think any testers round my area will know how to test a VC.

Yep and im going to try and arrange a day when he could help.
I was just saying locally a mechanic garage who knows how to check a vc in my area is doubt full as footstuck said to check vc out using rollers. Which i dont have any at home so i assume footstuck meant at a garage/mot test place.

Problem resolved.
No High street garage can assess the wiability of your VC, if you choose to reject Clive's genorous offer then you will need to traverse several motorways to ascertain professional opinion.
