Tdi miles better for power and mpg, but it costs a LOT more to install

Tdi is the best option but the most work involved, is your van a keeper/ good condition etc.
or are you just after a bit more torque? With Tdi you will have to upgrade the gearbox.
I'm considering a Tdi conversion as 1.9td are few and far between
But then should I just sort out the old IX and be happy?
Its a never ending question depending on how much money and time and skill you have

I had the same dilemma....a good healthy jx that did me proud for four years.....to be ripped out in favour of an unknown tdi.
It is a fair outlay....especially if you add the extra grand for the gearbox refurb and mod.

But....if its a keeper....in my opinion.... and if you can find someone to do it properly its the best money you will spend on the van.....
Totally transforms how it drives, how fast it drives up banks, how well it pulls in 4th gear meaning that you don't have to keep dropping down....
And you are future proofing it to some extent as the tdi engines are plentiful.
