16" front hubs

Post by ..lee.. »

Why do the 16" front hubs have longer steering arms. Pain in the b*m not being able to fit 15" wheels too.

To give "acceptable" steering effort on non-pas models maybe? I suppose that VW never considered that anyone would want to fit smaller wheels to the HD suspension package.

Very possible Ian. That said it also reduces steering ratio slightly.

When I've fitted my newly acquired 16" power steering uprights on the Doka ( when upgrading to factory PS) what are the chances of altering the set of non PS uprights on there currently to take PS ( as a spare set for both vans) . When I say 'altering' , I actually mean 'when Ian modifies...'

I always wondered if fitting 16" stuff would work on 15" wheels. Now I know!

I'd heard the 15's woudn't fit but because the brakes are bigger. I think a 15" wheel would fit over the brake but the steering arm is just too long and the track rod end hits the wheel. Doesn't make sense to me. Bigger wheels due to bigger brakes. Yes. But bigger wheels to clear steering arms doesn't make sense. Now if they were going 16" wheels anyway why lengthen the steering arms.
Be interesting to see if factory power steering 16" hubs will be ok with 15" wheels.

Only 1 hole. Spacing the wheels ? Didn't check but think you'd have to go pretty wide to clear. Ill measure and see.

I had 20mm spacers on but the merc steels were et47 ????? Et49 ????? Ill have to re check. Don't think et25 will clear I think you'd have to end up with et05 ish.

It'll be a while but next time the front is off the floor ill check and take some pics.

Like you say....a step backwards really. You have power steering on yours? ET5 is obviously not good and suspect that even 25 would tug a bit without ps

I have eps, so all non ps system from the column down. Never seen a 16" with factory ps up close so couldn't compare.
