Diesel syphoning

Post by discipleofsketch »

The previous owner of my 1.6 n/a diesel told me not to fill the tank right up because "the diesel syphons". I'm presuming he meant it starts coming out of the filler cap? I haven't actually verified this myself, but ideally I could fill it right up, especially when touring, so a couple of questions:-

1. Is this a common problem with diesels?

2. What might be the cause and is there anything I can do about it?

cheers in advance helpful T25 people!

Bump - I decided to test the theory of what happens if I fill my tank right to the top this morning - guy at next pump kindly pointed out I was pi$$ing diesel all over the forecourt. So it comes out of the top of the tank somewhere - presumably through a breather or where the filler joins? Any common issues with this happening? Haven't noticed any fuel leaks before, and after driving for 30 mins I just checked it and it's not leaking now..

It's the rubber pipes to the expansion tanks.
