Speedo working, but mileometer not......help!!

Post by stowiethechamp »

Hi All
My second post - thanks for all your help so far with my van.
I have a new problem.... the speedo works but the mileometer doesn't. Does anyone have any bright ideas? Might it be an easy to locate cable problem or am I looking at a whole new dash clock set-up????

Thanks in advance guys.

Same here - it appears that the gears which drive the mileometer slip on the shaft inside the speedo, and drop out of mesh. It might be fixable, it might not. And, if it is, then it might not stay fixed.

If you decide to replace, rather than just live with it, then you don't need a whole dash - just a speedo.

The gear is pressed onto the shaft (interference fit) after 25 years the plastic becomes brittle and cracks, it then no longer grips to the shaft properly and starts to 'travel' until it falls out of mesh....
Nothing much you can do other than replacing the head complete. Many try to superglue the gear, which does work but doesn't last long.
Although I haven't tried it myself, there maybe a possibility of using something like an electrical connecting block (the small brass piece with screws) as a means of stopping the gear from travelling laterally on the shaft. Worth a try.

Not sure how similar the tiny drive gear inside the speedo is to a Scirocco one, but on the Rocco, stripping the speedo head out, slight dismantling and CAREFUL tiny drip of super glue (dripped off a watchmakers screwdriver or similar) fixed mine. Not a big job really. As I say, and not wishing to contradict Martin, a T25 one may be a bit different inside...

ive had my counter apart on a number of occasions, the spiral cog kept falling out.

so I glued a washer to the side to stop the bar sliding out and has been fine for a good few months now

It's that pesky spiral cog moving out of position. With some decent glue it should hold in place which should solve your problem. You should not need a complete new speedo.

Thanks thanks thanks and thanks again for all the advice guys. Now here-in lies the problem. I am reasonably hands-on, but by no means a mechanic, far from a hobbyist, and a million miles away from being an expert. How simple is taking the clock apart and searching for a cracked cog?? The last thing i want to do is create more problems and run the risk of not even having a working speedo......

Thanks (again!)

its like looking at any broken household appliance, it might not work once youve took it apart again. but its either that or no mile counter

There is information about removal somewhere, getting the speedo needle off requires quite a pull and but youve just got to be brave.

but all in all its not too complicated

I had the same problem when i bought mine, i tried the reset button several times and it seemed to move but just stopped straight away.

Before you start taking things apart... I used a special poking devise (think it was a pen!) to push the reset as far into the dash as it seemed to go without breaking. It fixed it!

Hi Guys,

I hope you don't mind me resurrecting this post, but I am having the same problem.

I did a bit of digging and removed some of the dash to get behind the speedo but then bottled it and decided to take a picture and ask a bit more advice :D

So this is where I got to. The picture is taken from behind the speedo looking back towards the driver's seat.

Image

So is the cog that is probably broken or has slipped in the white housing you can see in the above picture? Do I have to remove the blue ribbon and 4 screws to get it out? If I have to remove the blue ribbon, is that difficult and easy to put back in? Would any soldering be required?

Thanks,
Tim.

yes , you need to remove the 4 screws to see the cog

removing the speedo

ALWAYS undo the 4 screws first,
2nd remove the buzzer circuit from inside the speed ( gently bend lugs and pull away)
3rd remove the PCB gently from the lugs on the speedo

NEVER first pull of the pcb!!!
if you pull the PCB of before removing the circuit you will damage the PCB beyond repair!

this will get the seedo out so you can repair

the cog is the same setup as all era VW's BUT the ratio for acyrate reading is determind by the size of these cogs ( T25 KMH speedos have different teetheh gears!)

Thanks Billy.

I'm glad I bottled it and seeked some more advice.I was contemplating pulling the blue ribbon off. Sounds like I would have knackered it.

I'll follow your instructions and see how I get on.

By the way, is the mileometer not working an MOT fail do you know?

Cheers.

Definately not an MoT issue.
