Fitting a zig

Post by Theolegit »

I've just acquired a cf6 for my westy camper. Already have a split charge between the two batteries in place can I leave this intact or do I need to strip this out? Thanks

The westy split charge is a basic relay type. You could replace it with the zig output but there is no need if your batteries are charging OK. There is a slight bit of "intelligence" in the westy relay feed as the power to it drops while the starter motor is running. The weak point in it is the relay itself (and earths if they haven't been cleaned recently) which doesn't have a lot of head room for the amps going through it but basically it works OK. I found when I had a Zig that the 12v output whilst driving wasn't that great after losses through the convoluted electrics.
Is the Zig to replace the 240V side of the system?

There is no 240 at the mo because its an American westie so that needs to be changed to 240v.

the cf6 is a manual switch to change from charge or not. I would leave the automated one in

This is the same pretty much.

Thanks for the replies.
Is it safe to have the zig and he split charge working in tandem? I've got no bbb installed.
Would I need to leave the switch on the zig to on site setting when driving?

Leave it in the on site position all the time and leave your split system in. if you flick it the other way then that is the manual split charge. all it does is make a connection between the crank battery and leisure. To be honest, I would not even connect the crank battery to the zig as you will not be using it that way. :D
