no output from coil(no spark)

Post by VERAT25 »

hi
broke down at the weekend(first time in 3 years) and first time in 35 years on a transporter home
lost all power and aa have pointed towards ignition module or coil.
the module he pointed out was the one with the plug on..leads go to distibutor
are these modules still available >????

Brickwerks have these in stock. Be careful as there are two different types. They call it an 'ignition amplifier'. Has the coil been checked to make sure it is not the problem? No point replacing the amplifier if the problem is with the coil. Good luck.

This is the easiest option if you don't have all the correct test gear.

Find someone near you (on here  ) and swap bits around (coil first, then Ignition Amp, then dizzy) until you get your sparks back. Mind you, I take it you have a simple test meter and have tested all the relevant connections on the afore mentioned parts ? Sometimes the plug on the bottom of the ignition amp gets a bit of corrosion on it's terminals, and a good clean up and re-plugging it in will sort that, though I would have thought the AA bod would have checked that (and the connections come to think of it).

The coil can be checked quite simply with a battery, spark plug lead and plug, and a couple of bits of wire. Fit the plug lead and spark plug into the HT socket of the coil. Then connect a feed to the positive terminal of the coil from the positive of the battery. Now rest the spark plug against the negative post of the battery. Finally connect a wire to the negative terminal of the coil and briefly flash it against the negative post of the battery. If the coil is good, then the spark plug will show a spark.

You may want to wear rubber gloves whilst you do this, unless you don't mind the possible HT jolt yourself. I don't bother with the gloves 'cus I quite enjoy the jolt. It makes my eyes sparkle! :rofl

All of this is just replicating a simple contact breaker circuit.

if your passing glos any time soon and can supply you with a dizzy , ign amp , coil to try

check the obvious , feed to coil , good earth connection near dizzy or on head - even if it looks ok remove and clean , ihave had non starting vans before due to bad connection even though it all looked ok.

coils rarely fail , but usually the first item to be replaced!

dizzys more often than not seems to produce intermittent faults

the ign amp usually just fails

Oh and might be worth checking your rotor arm, if fitted with the (more complicated looking) "rev limiting" type these can cause problems (mine did in France a month ago) - just replace with a normal one (about £4 new). I mean you ain't going to over rev it (are you ?)...

just the odd time when loaded and pulling up that steep hill.

its suprising how often if you use your van loaded it will cut in - usually forgetting its in 3rd!

vw didnt fit rev limiters for no reason!

cheap ones are naff - genuine last as long as a normal one , its just some people prefer to buy tat for there van than reliable service items

Fair comment J,
I don't think I have or am likely to do that, but for the cost I will get a decent replacement rev limiting one :ok

As far as I remember, the only thing that can make a clicking noise on the carb is the fuel cut off valve (it will be mentioned a shown in the Haynes). This should not click when wires are wiggled. Suggest tracing the wire back from that solenoid (valve) on the carb and look for bad connections. A fault here WOULD cause the engine to stop for no apparent reason, BUT, would NOT cause a lack of sparks at the coil or plugs :?

Just a thought, there are at least 2 types of coil. I wonder if the one you fitted was

A) new (or used)
B) the correct type for electronic ignition systems

A coil designed for points ignition will not work correctly with electronic ignition (or the other way round) plus fitting the wrong coil could damage it or the ignition module (small square box on l/h inner "wing").

Just a thought....
