Lost a bit more Syncro virginity today

Post by syncropatrick »

After 4 years of having the van I'd never changed a CV joint, always paid for it to be done, until today. Probably the record for slowness but I did a rear with both joints. Took me 6 hours, and that was knocking off the old joints and fitting new ones with new boots, not even refurbing the old ones.

Feel well chuffed. Now I know what I'm doing I'll dig out all my spare shafts and joints and refurb them ready to go, as I see why people carry a built spare - its really a too mucky job to do in the field.

Found this VanCafe page useful http://www.van-cafe.com/home/van/page_1 ... nence.html and used Brickwerks quality parts so no problems with the work, just was slow and lacking a few tools including circlip pliers and a vice on my bench.

What's the best stuff to dunk degrease old joints after a wipe down - petrol, degreaser, brake cleaner? I guess I need to use something so I can inspect properly to assess rebuild potential.

well done patrick, messy job that thankfully dose not need doing too often, but your right a vice and cir clip plyers make the job a whole lot easier, i use an old pot with petrol and a paint bruch to clean the old joints/boots as it is cheap, and i always have it in the garage, also once you wipe the parts down it will evaporate quickly. leaving you with dry clean parts to work with.
break clutch cleaner also works well too.

Paraffin is ideal, and if you have space a degreaser tank is so handy...I have one in the garage and it gets a lot of use.
