Which engine?

Post by lloydie71 »

I'm planning an engine swap for my jx syncro which is very tired. I've got a 1Z and an AHU in dead golf estates at home. Does anyone have views on which engine would be best for the transplant?

If the 1z has no immobilser (no chip in key, 93/94 models) its slightly easier to wire up. The ahu has a fractionally larger turbo i think. If your competent to fit either just go with the lowest mileage/best service history engine as you won't notice a difference in them driving wise.

Nothing in it really, fit one and keep the other for spare. As stated the early 1z has no immo...but the later ecu does but also is a bit cleverer....not sure the difference is that great but I personally would go with the later option and have the immo as well.

Thanks guys,

millage is roughly the same on both, 150K. I've got history on the 1999 AHU back to about 70K but the oil light flashes on start up 4-5 times, possible oil pump or big end issues (i fitted new sensors which made no difference). The 94-95 1Z is pretty much unknown but doesn't appear to have any issues. They are both 90hp, is one easier to 'chip' to 110hp than the other?

thanks again,
Lloyd.
