How much to fit a V6?
HI all,
As much as I love my wee van, I'd like to fit a V6 and convert it to LPG. I've looked about the forum and would prefer an Audi V6. Couple of reasons - I like them and know how they work and they are also from the VAG stable. I'm not really keen on a Subaru engine. I'm fairly competent at working on cars, but feel this would jsut be too much for me to take on. I don't have permanent access to a workshop, I don't weld and I also like using the van most weeks, so don't want it off the road forever.
WIth that in mind, can anyone give me an idea how much I might get charged by one the the specialists to fit something like an Audi V6, assuming I provide a fully working car? I'd appreciate thoughts before I phone around - I know all garages have enough to be doing without a 'How much might you charge' phone call. I also know the answer could be 'how long is a piece of string', but hopefully have a rought idea
Thanks all

Re: How much to fit a V6?
Hmmm... if it was the lower end of the scale, I'd be sorely tempted. I might be sad, but I dream of having a nice smooth, quiet V6 back there and cruising all day long at 70mph without stopping for breath on hills. It would encourage me to take the van much further afield.
I know a 2.1 would do it, but I'm a V6 person at heart. Scimitar, Corrado, Audi.

good luck with it

Re: How much to fit a V6?
Yeah, i agree. I'm OEM at heart, I'd upgrade the suspension and brakes as required, but hope to stay on standard steel wheels and so on. If I had a garage that was my own and big enough to take the van, I would be very tempted to do it myself. I've considered the VR6 as I know my way about it pretty well, but I don't want to have to raise the back, although I'm sure I coudl live with it. IT doesn't have enough power down in low revs for my liking either, having owned 4 different cars with them.
When we were thinking of selling my partners S4, I was very close to breaking it and putting the engine in the van, but that would be OTT for my needs! An N/A V6 would be fine. Nothing against V8's mind you, just never owned one, although we did put one in my friends S2A Land Rover. That was easy because jsut about everything just fitted in without mods!

Re: How much to fit a V6?
If you go a little above the higher bracket you can have my Cosworth V6 powered crewcab.
Do with it what you will.
You could pull out the full conversion and install it in your machine, straight swap over, install your motor in the crewcab and probably sell the crewcab for more than you bought it for as it would appeal to more people. The crewcab is a mint crewcab, ask anybody on here who has seen it either in the flesh (a few have been out in it) or seen it at Tatton park. It has been in dry storage for 2 years now.
I would say if you have the skills you could do the swap out in a weekend. The wiring harness has been made very simple, all you have to do is put a + a - a switched live and a speedo sensor and bobs your uncle you have the power sorted.
Unbolt gearbox mount, 2 engine mounts, driveshafts, disconnect wiring, drain system, disconnect air filter remove exhaust and the full assembly can come out ready for reverse install into your bus. Fuel tak had pump installed so it is a fuel tank swap, new fuel lines flow and return and you have 220bhp at your foot. I would go as far as with a slight mod (and I mean slight) you could make it sit under a normal engine cover. I think the way I ran the back water tube may clash by about 5mm but I did not have the constraints of a normal bus. You can not tell it has a V6 in it unless you look underneath the rear panel, there are no bodywork mods needed.
As for power well I took Toomanytoys out in it and Aiden they can testify the power of it as for motorway cruising then Aiden can build you a box that will allow you to cruise at 70mph at what ever revs you want as it has the torque to pull the titanic from the bottom of the ocean.
As for the grin factor when it dusts most things, well lets just say remember the advert when the guy flips his head over to clean his back teeth, you will be smiling that big. I think IIRC we dusted a Nova GSi on the outside lane of a roundabout and his face was as they say 'Priceless'
PM me if you are interested as it is in my workshop doing nothing.
You can even have a full spare cosworth motor, a spare DK 4 speed box, Fibreglass top box, spare 2 light grill, Chrome bumper and everything else T25 I have in my workshop. Read the full thread of the build if you want to know anything about it.
