alternative engine configs.

Post by boxer »

I'm moving this to here because I might have put it in the wrong place?

has anyone ever fitted a FWD setup such as a the golf or passat or the BMW diesel out of a rover 75 and retained the drive train from the doner car? i.e. fitted the gear box drive shafts and engine transversley across the back of the bus a la MGF?

Incidentally leaving space behind the engine for such things as batteries and other stuff.

Im new to the T25 but it does seem to have a lot of wasted space around the engine and gearbox.

the post is for a different set up, but in essence the same problem is found 5 gears in reverse and on forward, plus if you fit it the right way round it would need to be fitted more to the front so the bulk head will need adapting!

What the guy on brickyard did was to take an in line FWD engine/gearbox and flip the box so that it drove the right way. Most modern FWD setups are transverse and my idea was to fit it transversly. Yea it would drive backwards if you did not flip it somehow. but some sort of mod to the box internals to produce a counter rotation of the drive shafts. I'm pretty sure I have seen a kit car with a rear mounted mini engine with this mod, easier probably because the gearbox is in the sump?
