Stalling in neutral

I am very interested in the outcome as had similar problems for over a year now, just cannot find what the problem is. It's proper random, can go for weeks running a dream then weeks stalling as per this subject. Lets hope they sort it and get your van running good.

The garage still haven't been able to repeat the fault, despite several decent length drives. We're going to proceed with a full service to see if that unearths anything.

Bit worrying really, I'd probably preferred to have found a fault and actually paid to have something specific fixed!

Has anyone else had a phantom problem that's just disappeared like this?

Hello! It's a 1.9l petrol engine. Watercooled. I'll take some photos of it later and upload.

Got the van back from Southwest Splitz yesterday. They couldn't make it fault at all, so have given it a good service (new filters etc) and it seems to be running OK so far (if a little cold this morning, no surprise!). Apparently there's not much left on the clutch, so I wonder if that could be the problem. The day it kept stalling in neutral we were in heavy traffic, so had to keep restarting and moving forward slowly which involved a fair bit of riding the clutch... I wonder if this did some damage which caused the chugging and loss of power the next day?

How much am I looking at to get a new clutch sorted? It's something that I think I'd rather do sooner rather than later if it's got to be done.

The clutch isnt going to get better by itself.

If you have no DIY capacity, then take the advice of forum members who are better placed..

Get the job done properly..

It is not worth skimping.

Once fitted will give you peace of mind and happy volksing..

Which is what it is all about.

Service regularly, look for leaks, learn how to bleed the system,

I'm no mechanical genius, but even I knew that If anyone does invent a self-repairing clutch I'd suggest a trip to Dragons Den

Definitely going to get the clutch replaced and certainly won't be a cheapskate about it. I don't have the know-how required to do it myself so will take it back to South West Splitz for the work. What would be a reasonable price for parts & labour?

Regarding your fault which is occasional it is easy to test a coils resistance if you look at the Haynes manual and have a multi meter, takes 5 mins. Other thoughts are to check, clean and reassemble any earths in the engine bay. Have you cleaned out the tiny gauze filter on the inlet to the Pierburg carb? If this was temporarily blocked if can be a pain. Good luck, it all gets easier and less daunting the more you do! £

Managed a 250+ mile round trip at the weekend without a hitch. Seems like changing the filters etc may have done the trick!

...and after having a new alternator fitted and getting the van back today, out of nowhere the stalling has started again

Despairing a bit because this is the second Saturday in a row that I've had the van back from the garage only for something to go wrong the very same day.

Could it just be the idle cam that needs adjusting? My mechanic mate says he'll try to adjust it this week.

Shaun at South West Splitz said he'd tweaked the emissions - I wonder if that's caused this latest bout of stalling.

Has that cone filter been cleaned? It seems to have been set aside in all the testing. Its hidden just inside the fuel inlet on the carb.

Update on this - automatic choke has been given some tinkering and the idle jet cleaned out. Seems to have sorted it for now - it's even idling fine when first started in the morning, massive improvement.

Off to North Devon for a couple of nights tomorrow, so fingers crossed it's incident free. Don't want to have to use breakdown recovery #3 - I've only got 6 to play with all year!

I'd hazard a guess that something in the inlet or vacuum piping is ancient, cracked, and letting in air. Somehow, they nudged it so that it wasn't leaking. Now they've nudged it again and it is leaking again.
