Can anyone tell me what this is please?

Post by grizgut »

Hello All,

New owner of an 84 Caravelle GL with a Westfalia multivan interior. The attached picture is of an extra instrument bolted to the middle of the dash that the PO had never been able to figure out, even after 2 years of ownership. Has anyone got any ideas what this is for?

Thanks :?

Hello Rob,

I did wonder if it might be as an auxiliary heater is fitted but the dash control knob is still present and the PO used this to show me how it worked.

I've been searching through various websites and forums but can't see anything like it. Does not look like an original Eberspacher timer at all.

It looks like ATO used to manufacture ohmmeters - possibly from the same stable?
Pull it out and see what marks and numbers are on the back and what wiring there is to it.

Oldie but goodie,

That was my other thought, some sort of battery monitor. I'll undo it in the next few days and see if there is any ID on the rear of the unit.

My guess would be a meter to measure & report on the leisure/starter battery charge condition.

Well, I took the unit off the dash and it says "Made in Taiwan" (or somewhere else closeby) on the back. Not much help.

There is no leisure battery fitted but wiring is in place for one. I will see if I can trace the dash units wiring to the leisure batteries, or failing that see if there appears to be 'extra' cabling from the rear of the auxiliary heater control.

Thanks chaps.

I agree, could be a timeclock/timer for a heater. OFF/AUTO/ON and a SET function

Why not give it 12v and find out what the screen displays? If anything....

They have never used ATO manufactured devices to my knowledge. Highly unlikely that anyone would find a controller from a USA manufacturer/distributor that carried out the function of European heater manufacturers controllers.
Pics of the wiring etc at the rear would help maybe.

Nope, they all have the instant heat/temp setting button which looks like a flat bar with heat haze above it.

The control unit is the same as the timer for my Trumatic E1800 gas heater. Mine is located just below the thermostat, on the side cupboard in the rear. Did it have a heater under the rear seat at some stage?
